NOVEMBER 2022 Meeting - Back to Basics - Revision of Variation 4 and 5

On a chilly monsoon morning, 13 members braved the rainy weather forecast to assemble at ABK Dosokai for another revision session. This time it was Sensei Grade 2 Sanyo and Jonin Sanyo Dalley Varghese who effortlessly demonstrated the intricacies of Basic Variation 4 and Variation 5 supported by her daughter Susan. The demonstration was highlighted  by expert comments from Riji Mrs Malathi Pandurang.

The first demonstration was basic Variation 4 or the missing style without Soe in  Nageire style using  an elongated ceramic black vase with a wide rim on a circular rustic wooden tray.  The plant materials were deftly assembled by Ms Varghese who showed the beautiful curve of a lemon branch as Shin in the drooping style complemented by delicate cream colored roses tinged with pink as Hikae and Jushis.

The second demonstration a basic Variation 5 on  white fiber glass moribana vase using branches of African princess shrub, some lovely chilli hibiscus stems with tiny red blooms and  orange-yellow chrysanthemums.

Ms Varghese also shared pictures of Variation 4 and Variation 5 recreated at her residence.

Members showcased innovative arrangements in anticipation of the forthcoming annual exhibition in  Jan 2023.

Ambika Chandrashekhar's   bold experiment with colours and lines, using some discarded fencing material, produced lovely Ikebana. Gypsophilia, michealamias daises, gerberas enhanced the twist and turn of plastic wires.

Molly Cherian combined  Variation 4 upright style in a tall Bamboo container  and  Variation 4 Hanging  style in a small  Nageire  Bamboo  container to form a beautiful free style arrangement.  Materials used were African princess  branch, Bahunia flowers,  anodized  aluminum wires in  two colors and wooden  plank.

Mohan Vummidi used Murraya dry branch,  an Agava plant and chrysanthemums to make a striking arrangement

Chelvi Gopinath explored the concept of parenting in color balanced arrangement using eranthamum branch, creeping fig Ivy and chrysanthemums in a ceramic container.

Chitra Rajan wished to convey Fatal Attraction using driftwood from a 100 year old Nilgiris Shola Forest,  pencil cactii, tree bark and an Auroville ceramic vase.

The demonstration was followed by a planning discussion about the forthcoming annual exhibition in January 2023.  The meeting concluded with some good fellowship and bonding over tea.
